Iwas told that rototillers didn`t work well with the older tractors like the ford jubilee. Is there any truth to that?

There are 3 factors that effect the performance of these tractor with the tillers. First not all have 3 pt hitches as they were an option and a lot of people did not have 3 pt implements so...
Most were sold with a single stage clutch so the PTO stops as you stop the tractor. For tilling it is much easier to start the tiller before you enter the row.
The other problem is that you need about a 6 ft tiller to cover the tracks of the tires. The 25-30 HP at the PTO is a little light to spin such a big rototiller. ....

Another problem could be gearing.
My brother has an 8n ford.( I think its an 8n) with no low range.
It is geared far to fast in its lowest gear for tilling. ....

I don't know if tillers with offsets are available but an offset might solve the width/power issue. Ground speed may be an unavoidable problem. I was surprised to learn that a mystery lever on a Yanmar was a creeper, and creepers are standard features on some models Yanmars. Apparently ground is worked almost exclusively by tillers in Japan. Creepers are considered almost essential because of the very low ground speeds they provide. I could use something slower than my lowest reverse at .8 mph at pto rpm when blowing deep snowfalls. I imagine something slower would be good for a tiller if I had one but creepers were an option for my Ford. I imagine my ford 1710's lowest reverse is slower than the 8's are. ....

The replies you have received are right on the mark. The ideal tractor would have an independant PTO and much lower gearing than the Jub has. There are several who claim satisfactory results with the old Fords by making several shallow passes with a tiller, but most feel that if the garden is big enough to cost justify a 3 point tiller (versus hiring it done or even a big Troy Bilt) it is probably big enough to plow and disc. A Jub will plow and disc all day long and never complain. In my case I have an 8N and an 850 (so no horsepower concerns)and would not even consider a 3 point tiller because soil has so much clay it would take a huge number of passes to get acceptable results. ....
